Prescription Drug Price FinderDid you know that the price of prescription drugs may vary from pharmacy to pharmacy? The Attorney General created this website to help Vermonters comparison shop among pharmacies, since drug prices typically are not advertised or even displayed. Provided here are prices for approximately 90 of the most commonly used drugs in Vermont, as reported by the State’s Medical Assistance Program. The Attorney General selected the drugs that appear in this website by determining the most popular drugs prescribed through the Vermont Medicaid Program during the fall of 2006. The list includes drugs that in all their various forms were sold more than 3000 times in the test period, as well as all the particular dose and quantity for individual drugs that were sold more than 500 times in the same period. The list of drugs will be periodically updated to reflect changes in purchasing practices. This website is interactive and will allow you to perform a variety of searches to obtain price information based on particular drugs sold by pharmacies within a town or county. Click Prescription Drug Price Finder to get started. Because the database is large, it will take some time for it to load before you are able to search. About the prices: The prices reflected on the Drug Price Finder are the prices that pharmacies reported to the Vermont Medical Assistance Program as their “usual and customary” prices charged to customers without insurance during the time period from December 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009. The “usual and customary” price is comparable to what a cash-paying customer without insurance would pay. This price does not include discounts that a pharmacy may offer to seniors, price matching programs, or other discounts. Prescription drug prices may vary from day to day, so the price that you find at your pharmacy may not be the same price that appears in the Drug Price Finder. The prices on the Drug Price Finder were reported when a pharmacy filled a prescription for a Medicaid patient for a drug included in the Finder. Some pharmacies may not have filled a prescription for a particular drug during the time period, so for those pharmacies, there will not be any price information for that particular drug. Other pharmacies may have filled many prescriptions for Medicaid patients for a particular drug during the time period and may have reported different prices for the same drug. In that event, the Drug Price Finder reflects the price that was reported most recently. Please be aware that it is generally a good practice for consumers to buy all of their medications from the same pharmacy so that a pharmacist can keep track of the medications they are taking in order to avoid potentially harmful interactions. If you do decide to shop at more than one pharmacy, make sure that you tell the pharmacists all of the drugs you are taking.
