CONTACT: Julie Brill, Assistant Attorney General, (802) 828-3658

September 10, 2008 - Vermont Attorney General William H. Sorrell announced today that his office has settled charges in connection with Allen Brothers Oil prepaid fuel program. Allen Brothers Oil, located in Westminster, VT, entered into 190 prepaid contracts with Vermont consumers for the 2007-2008 heating season without securing the contracts as required by law.

The settlement is contained in an Assurance of Discontinuance filed today with the Washington Superior Court.

The Assurance requires Allen Brothers Oil to secure all prepaid contracts for heating oil with futures contracts, bonds, lines of credit, or cash, as required under the law. The Assurance further requires Allen Brothers Oil to pay the State of Vermont $10,000 in the event that it fails to meet these statutory requirements in connection with any future prepaid contracts.

More information concerning this Assurance of Discontinuance or other Vermont consumer protection issues in general may be found at www.atg.state.vt.us.
