Attorney General Announces New Website For Vermont Consumers

Attorney General William H. Sorrell announced today the launch of a new website for Vermont consumers. The Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program collaborated with the University of Vermont to create the new website. The Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) provides assistance to consumers who have complaints against businesses regarding goods and services and provides information on consumer rights, fraud prevention and referrals to other service providers. "The Consumer Assistance Program is a vital service to Vermonters," Attorney General Sorrell said. "CAP handles hundreds of complaints from Vermonters every month and recovers thousands of dollars for Vermont consumers every year. Our new website will make it easier for Vermonters to get the help and information they need to be smart consumers."

The new website features a wide array of content on consumer issues, an online complaint form, links to other federal, state and private sector service providers, and multimedia informational content. Consumers can file complaints directly from the new website. Consumers can also sign up to receive consumer alerts from the Attorney General’s Office.

In addition to the assistance CAP provides to consumers, "the information provided to CAP by Vermont consumers is critical to my efforts to enforce Vermont's consumer fraud laws," Attorney General Sorrell said. Over the past year the Attorney General’s office has used consumer complaints to amend Vermont’s Consumer Rule regulating propane, and to investigate and eventually settle with a number of debt settlement companies, AT&T/Unicel, Dish Network, and Vonage.
