November 13, 2012

Attorney General William Sorrell announced today that Assistant Attorney General Susanne R. Young became Deputy Attorney General on November 13, 2012. Susanne replaces Sorrell’s deputy, Janet C. Murnane, who left the position to become Director of the Consumer Assistance Program on the campus of the University of Vermont. The Deputy Attorney General is the second highest position in the office, manages many of its day-to-day functions and assists in the oversight of over seventy Assistant Attorneys General.

Commenting on the appointment, Attorney General Sorrell said: “First, I am so very grateful to Janet Murnane, who has served so ably as my Deputy. I am pleased that she will now be doing stellar work all over this state to protect and educate consumers and businesses. Second, I am very pleased that Susanne Young is willing to take on the Deputy job. We have worked well together in the past. She’s a great lawyer, is well respected in the Vermont bar, has my complete trust, and I am excited about working with her.”

Susanne Young served as Governor James Douglas’ legal counsel for eight years and Deputy State Treasurer for three years. She also worked with this Office as an Assistant Attorney General, Chief of the Criminal Division, and an interim term as Deputy Attorney General. Susanne has also served as Director of the Medicaid Fraud Unit and as a Special Litigator.

Ms. Young is a graduate of UVM and Vermont Law School. Her reputation for sound judgment and professionalism are a tremendous asset for the office.
