Attorney General William H. Sorrell Launches Domestic Violence Awareness Month

CONTACT: Amy S. FitzGerald, Assistant Attorney General, (802) 828-5520

October 12, 2007 - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Attorney General William Sorrell has joined with law enforcement, domestic violence advocates and the Court Administrator’s Office to address domestic and sexual violence as a public health and safety issue.

To help mark October 2007 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Vermont Attorney General's Office and the Court Administrator’s Office are offering a training regarding protection orders in Vermont and in particular the new sexual assault and stalking orders that are available in Vermont Superior Court. The training consists of a one-hour presentation in conjunction with domestic violence programs and the Vermont Police Academy. It is offered to court staff, judges, advocates, law enforcement agencies and attorneys. The training is given on-site at county courts during the staff lunch break. It provides an overview of the protection order process in Vermont as well as information regarding stalking and sexual assault cases and the new civil protection orders. In 2007, the training was held in the following five county courthouses: Rutland, Windsor, Orange, Bennington and Lamoille. The training will be presented in Franklin and Grand Isle in November of 2007.

"Our goal is to work collaboratively with the courts and law enforcement to reduce violence in Vermont and to provide timely and effective protection orders for victims and their families," states Attorney General Sorrell.
