CONTACT: Janet Murnane, Deputy Attorney General, (802) 828-3173

October 26, 2010

The Vermont Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has concluded its investigation of a complaint made by the Brian Dubie Campaign concerning the attendance of members of the Vermont Trooper’s Association (VTA) at a press conference held by the Shumlin Campaign. The purpose of the press conference was to announce and publicize the VTA’s endorsement of Peter Shumlin. The complaint alleged that VTA compensated its members for time spent at the press conference and that such compensation should have been reported as an in-kind contribution by the Shumlin Campaign.

The AGO obtained information from organizations and individuals involved in this matter. On the basis of that information, and review of the Campaign Finance Law and the Secretary of State’s Campaign Finance Guide, the AGO has concluded that there was no violation of law. The relevant provision of the Campaign Finance Law, 17 V.S.A. §2806a, prohibits the AGO, absent the permission of those providing the information, from releasing any information obtained in the course of its investigations into campaign finance matters.
