August 30, 2012

Vermont Attorney General William H. Sorrell announced that his office has charged the following five individuals with cocaine-related offenses: James Collins, Michael Hurst, Nicholas Louras, and Arabella Babcock all of Rutland, VT, and Samuel McGriff of Catskill, NY. Collins was charged with six counts of selling cocaine and one count of possessing cocaine. All seven charges are felonies and, combined, carry a maximum potential penalty of 55 years imprisonment, a fine of not more than $1,060,000.00, or both. Hurst, Louras, Babcock, and McGriff were each charged with felony possession of cocaine, which carries a maximum potential penalty of 5 years imprisonment, a fine of not more than $100,000.00, or both.

The charges resulted from an investigation into the distribution of crack cocaine in the Rutland City area conducted by the Vermont Drug Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms, the United States Marshals Service, and the Rutland City Police Department. According to documents filed in court, law enforcement officers conducted a motor vehicle stop on August 29, 2012 on Route 103 in Clarendon, VT. During the motor vehicle stop, Collins was found in possession of a loaded .22 caliber pistol. Officers also discovered approximately 13.1 grams of crack cocaine on Collins and an additional 7.6 grams of crack cocaine in the vehicle owned and operated by Louras.

At arraignment, all five individuals pled not guilty to the charges. The court imposed $100,000.00 bail on Collins, $25,000.00 bail on McGriff, $15,000.00 bail on Hurst, $10,000.00 bail on Babcock, and a $10,000.00 unsecured appearance bond on Louras. The court also imposed numerous other conditions of release should any of the five individuals post bail.
