December 15, 2008 - Attorney General William H. Sorrell announced today that former Isle LaMotte Town Clerk Suzanne LaBombard has been charged with one felony count of embezzlement by a public official in violation of 13 V.S.A. § 2537 and four felony counts of false claim in violation of 13 V.S.A. § 3016. LaBombard was arraigned today in Vermont District Court in St. Albans where she pleaded not guilty.

The charge arises out of an investigation conducted by the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, the Vermont State Auditor’s Office and the Vermont State Police. According to papers filed with the Court, LaBombard, the elected Town Clerk and Town Treasurer for the Town of Isle LaMotte from March 1985 to March 2007, admitted that she had stolen approximately $100,000.00 from the Town.

If convicted LaBombard could face up to ten years imprisonment and a fine of up to $1,000.00 on the embezzlement charge and up to five years imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000.00 on each of the false claim charges.
