July 16, 2013

Herman Donna, 62, of Townshend, Vermont, was arraigned in Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division today on a charge of simple assault, which was enhanced to a hate crime due to the circumstances under which the assault was alleged to have occurred. According to documents filed with the Court, Mr. Donna is accused of threatening to kill an African American man, who was canvassing on behalf of a Vermont non-profit organization, while pointing what appeared to be a gun at the man and referring to him using a racial epithet. Mr. Donna pleaded not guilty and the Court imposed standard conditions of release that govern his conduct while his case is pending. If convicted, Mr. Donna faces up to two years in prison or a fine of up to $2,000, or both.
